I-95 Shut Down Near Savannah Due to Tractor Trailor Accident
Traffic is normal again after two 18-wheeler wrecks on I-95 near Savannah on Tuesday. Emergency officials were clearing one single-vehicle 18-wheeler wreck on I-95 near Savannah when they came upon a charter bus that crashed into a second 18-wheeler.
One of the 10 bus passengers was airlifted from the scene for medical treatment. The other passengers, which included an infant, were taken to Memorial University Medical Center for treatment. The truck driver had minor injuries, according to news reports. Law enforcement initially said the bus driver was following the truck too closely, WTOC-TV reported.
WTOC-TV also reported the bus company has a bad driving record. Federal safety records show the company, GD Bus Inc., has a history of driving violations to include six citations this year. Speeding, failure to yield, disobeying traffic signals, and improper lane change are among the violations, WTOC said.
This wreck comes near the anniversary of a tractor-trailer crash that killed five people near Savannah on I-16 on May 19, 2016. Because of the ports in Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, nearby interstates are loaded with tractor-trailer traffic carrying freight. The vehicles weigh two tons and can create tragedy in what would be a fender bender with a car.
