Breaking News: Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on Savannah Highway
SAVANNAH, GA — Five people are left dead after a tractor trailer accident on I-16 near I-95 in Pooler, just outside of Savannah, on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 19th. This incident involved a total of seven vehicles and shut down a stretch of I-16 for several hours following the accident.
Local Police Chief Mark Revenew said that they are investigating the possibility that the accident was caused by a truck driver sleeping behind the wheel.
According to a report released by the Georgia State Patrol, a tractor trailer failed to stop and struck three cars and one pickup truck before hitting another tractor trailer. The second tractor trailer then crashed into a third. The first and second tractor trailer and one of the passenger cars caught fire.
As this is a preliminary report, there will be continued investigation into the matter. Charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
The victims in this incident ranged in age from 16 to 72.
Too recently, we reported on a similar incident on this same highway where a tractor-trailer collided with an SUV and another passenger car. These incidents occurred fewer than 20 miles apart.
Our thoughts go out to the individuals involved in this incident and their families as they navigate this heartbreaking time.
